SVA President’s Welcome

L to R: John T. Glenny III (aka Glenny), SVA President and Juan Landaverde, SVA Vice President

Hello Veteran Knights,

My name is John Glenny, Student Veterans of America (SVA) UCF Chapter President.  As a former Vet2Vet Peer Mentor at the University of Central Florida (UCF) Veterans Academic Resource Center (VARC), I found SVA to be very important for our veteran community. This drove me to put as much of my time into SVA as possible in order to make sure all current and future veterans feel welcome at UCF.  I want to make sure that as President of SVA, I reach out to every student veteran attending UCF.

Although many student veterans are aware there is an SVA, some unaware of the mission of SVA.  This communication to explain the purpose of SVA, publicize upcoming planned events, and provide organizational and leadership contact information. The chapter leadership values your import and if you have any events ideas, or how to help please let us know.  We invite you to join and participate in our GroupMe discussions.

As a student veteran, I often find it tough to connect with the university community. We are all at different points in our lives and have had very different experiences than the general UCF student population. Therefore, many of our student veterans often fly under the radar, sometimes having a sense that they don’t belong. SVA attempts to connect all UCF student veterans with other likeminded individuals that share similar life experiences and goals.

SVA is a national organization of over 1,500 student-led chapters of over 700,000 Student Veterans. Ultimately, each chapter is a family, and our family

at UCF is growing. Our goal is to make the campus a positive atmosphere for all UCF student veterans, which is vital for academic, personal, and professional growth and success. The most important thing for us is our student veterans’ success and well-being! We work very closely with the SALUTE National Veterans Honors Society, UCF VARC, and the UCF Student Government (SG) to ensure our student veterans are not only taken care of but a priority!  We cannot do this without your help and assistance.  You can help by attending an SVA at UCF meeting or event, or participating in our SVA GroupMe discussions, or contacting us with a concern or suggestion on how to improve the success of our student veterans at UCF! No matter the level of participation, we value your input!

WE DO NOT HAVE DUES! We are a family of veterans and we have become great friends and teammates. The organization is open to ALL student veterans, regardless of status or branch! We have monthly meetings to plan future events for our veterans and their families.  SVA stays connected and active with our student veterans and community by:

  • Tailgate at every UCF home football game.
  • Hosts social Events list Putt-Putt, Golf Outing, and bowling trips.
  • Participates in various community service events such as Wreaths Across American, Toys for Tots, and various canned food drives.

Because Networking is also very important to your personal and professional life and career, we also schedule networking events that are both social and professional.  We look forward to seeing at one of our many tailgates, community service projects, or SVA general membership meetings.
