Dr. Paul Viau
Director, VARC

Paul has had a wide spectrum of experiences in his 30 years as a higher education professional. He began his career in Residence Life and Student Activities at Slippery Rock University in 1983. From there he went to Dover, Delaware, where he was the Director of Student Activities for Wesley College. In 1987 he became the Assistant to the Dean at the University of Maryland's only residential campus in Europe. Overseeing all of UM's student life on the McGraw Army Base in Munich, Paul had the opportunity to live and work on a military base for the first time. He returned to the States in 1990, serving as Assistant Director of Student Activities and General Manager of WPRK for Rollins College. Paul moved to Texas and began his career as an Academic Advisor at Texas A&M University.

In 1997, UCF called Paul back to Orlando to work in the newly developed First Year Advising office. After nine years as Academic Advisor and Assistant Director, Paul left FYA to join the ranks of the UCF Registrar's Office as Associate Registrar. Along with former Assistant Registrar Jim Middlekauff, Paul helped to formulate the plans to create the VARC. In 2010, Director of VARC was added to his titles.

When he's not on campus working, Paul is found hanging out with his family or riding around Central Florida on his motorcycle.

Bethany Glassbrenner
Assistant Registrar, Veteran Services

Bethany has worked in Student Services in Higher Education for over 5 years. She started at the University of North Florida in their One Stop Student Services center where she assisted students in the areas of Admissions, Records and Registration, Financial Aid, and Veterans Affairs. Most recently, she was at East Tennessee State University working as a Program Specialist in their School of Graduate Studies. She is glad to be back in Florida and excited to be working closely with UCF's Veteran population.

Bethany is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but grew up overseas and attended middle and high schools in Tokyo, Prague, and Bangkok. She has traveled in Europe, Asia, and Africa and has visited over 20 different countries.

When not at the VARC, Bethany can be found running the streets of Orlando in preparation for her next race.

Joshua "JJ" Johnson
Program Coordinator

JJ comes to the VARC with over 10 years of professional higher education experience, primarily in academic advising and residence life. Before joining UCF in 2006, he worked at a variety of academic institutions and companies including Southwest Ohio Consortium of Higher Educations (SOCHE), University of West Florida, East Carolina University, and Hillsborough Community College in the areas of programming, residence life, academic advising, and academic and university relations.

JJ also spent 5 years as a hospitality management professional, serving as Director of Housekeeping and Assistant Property Management for companies such as Homewood Suites, Clarion Suites, and JME Vacations (Destin). JJ grew up in Dayton, Ohio, and is a graduate of Wright State University; he holds a Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration as well as a Bachelor’s in Communications and Public Relations.

He grew up as an Air Force dependent living on or near military bases including Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Joint Base Andrews, Joint Base Bowling, and Wright Patterson Air Force Base. When not teaching or taking courses at UCF, he can be found visiting the local theme parks, traveling, and reading.

Lorine Cisch-Taylor
Transfer & Transition Services / Career Services / Student Accessibility Services

Lorine has an Master's of Science degree in Social Work and has worked with veterans and their families in a variety of settings, including securing health insurance benefits for veterans' families and providing substance abuse counseling services. As the Transfer and Transitions Advisor at the Veterans Academic Resource Center, she provides whatever assistance necessary to make transitioning to UCF as positive and simple as possible for our veterans. She is a resource and advocate for their success. As the Career Services Advisor, Lorine's duties are assisting student veterans with career exploration, resume critique, job search strategies and networking. Lorine also serves as liaison with the Student Accessibility Services office as an advocate for student veterans, assisting them to obtain the appropriate accommodations and maximize their success as students at UCF.

Lorine has lived in the Orlando area since 2003 and is the proud mom of 2 daughters.

Lee Young
Office Manager

Lee, the office manager at the VARC, began his career with UCF as a part time peer mentor for student veterans. As a recipient of VA educational benefits and the only veteran on the full-time staff, he is uniquely qualified to provide one-on-one help to student veterans as they negotiate the often complex course of VA education regulations and rules.

Lee is also an Army retiree, having served this nation for 25 years. In December 2016, Lee will graduate from UCF with his Masters in Science, Criminal Justice. He received his undergraduate degree in CJ from UCF as well.

Lee and his wife and 2 daughters reside in Avalon Park, where they are very active in their church and community. When not at work, Lee often can be found in the “outdoors”, which he considers to be his home away from home.

Brian Barnett

Brian is a Sports and Exercise Science major with his vision set on going into physical therapy. He served as a Combat Engineer in the Marine Corps all over the U.S. and Afghanistan from 2010-2015. Brian is a huge music and movie buff who loves the outdoors and meeting good people. He's excited to learn all he can and knows UCF is a great place to do exactly that!

Juan “Tonny” Herrera Ramirez

Juan is from Mexico and emigrated to the United States of America in 2007, at the age of 40. One of the first things that he wanted to do when he decided to be an American citizen, was to serve in some way our country. Therefore, as soon as he could, he joined the US Army. He is a proud veteran with four years of service as a Healthcare Specialist (Combat Medic). He graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2016 with an Associate in Arts degree from Seminole State College. He is happily married to a retired school principal and teacher, Mildred, and has three children: Ana Maria, Emily, and Caroline. He is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work at the UCF and with a view to achieving a Master’s Degree in Social Work. He is fluent in both English and Spanish.

Cory Holms

Cory is a combat veteran that served in the U.S. Army as an Airborne Infantryman for nearly 5 years. He served in South Korea and subsequently was stationed at Ft. Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division, from which he was deployed to Afghanistan. Cory is an undergrad in a social work major and intends to progress to the MSW program. After getting his Master's degree, Cory plans to take the federal licensure test to become a licensed clinical social worker for the VA. Music is a major part of his life. Cory plays drums as a metalcore drummer. Getting tattoos is his form of therapy. His primary focus in life is to give back to our veterans as much as possible and to continue to make UCF the great place that it is!

Tracy Lovingood

Tracy is a veteran of the Navy. She served in San Diego on the USS John Paul Jones and the USS Decatur as a Sonar Technician. At UCF she is an Anthropology student. Tracy loves to travel and try new foods and once flew a pirate flag from one of her ships. As someone that has made the transition from Active Duty to civilian and transferred schools as well, Tracy is looking forward to assisting other students in making the switch as seamless and easy as possible.
